Broken Toe & Toe Fractures

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe (phalangeal fracture) is a crack or break in one of the small bones of the toes, usually caused by stubbing the toe, dropping a heavy object, or stress from repetitive impact. In patients with neuropathy, toe fractures can go completely unnoticed, leading to improper bone healing, joint deformities, or secondary skin breakdown.

Common Symptoms

Throbbing pain, swelling, and bruising over the injured toe · Difficulty walking or bearing weight on the forefoot · Visible crookedness or unnatural toe alignment · Pain when bending or pressing on the toe joint

Our Treatment Approach

Digital X-ray imaging to check bone alignment → closed reduction (realigning displaced bones under local anesthesia) → buddy taping / specialized toe splinting → rigid stiff-soled shoe fitting to restrict joint movement during healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a broken toe need a cast?
Most broken toes do not require a full leg cast. They heal effectively with buddy taping (securing the broken toe to the neighboring healthy toe) and a stiff-soled surgical shoe for 4 to 6 weeks.
Why is a broken toe dangerous if you have diabetes?
If you have nerve numbness, you might continue walking on a broken toe, causing the fractured bone fragments to pierce soft tissue or create severe pressure ulcers.
