What Is Gangrene?
Gangrene is the death of body tissue due to loss of blood supply, often following an untreated infection or severe circulation problem — one of the most serious complications of diabetic foot disease. It's also one of the most urgent: prompt, aggressive treatment is what determines whether a limb can be saved.
Common Symptoms
Skin that turns black, dark red, purple or blue-grey · Numbness alternating with severe pain in the affected area · A foul-smelling discharge · Skin that feels cold to the touch · Fever and general illness in infected (wet) gangrene
