Lymphedema is swelling caused by a blockage or dysfunction in the lymphatic system, which normally drains excess fluid from tissue. Chronic, severe lymphedema can progress to elephantiasis — dramatic swelling and skin thickening, most commonly in the legs. In parts of India it's also caused by filarial infection (mosquito-borne parasitic worms), which is the origin of the traditional name in both Tamil and Malayalam.
