What Is Necrotizing Fasciitis?
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly spreading bacterial infection that destroys skin, fat, and tissue covering the muscles (fascia) of the foot and leg. In diabetic patients, it often originates from a neglected wound or crack, spreading rapidly along muscle planes. It is a critical medical emergency requiring immediate surgical intervention to save life and ambutation.
Common Symptoms
Severe pain that is out of proportion to the visible skin wound · Rapidly spreading redness, warmth, and dark purple/black skin discoloration · Formation of fluid-filled blisters or skin breakdown · Crackling sensation under the skin when pressed (crepitus due to trapped gas) · High fever, confusion, chills, and sudden weakness

Emergency surgical debridement to clear infected fascia → high-dose IV broad-spectrum antibiotics → Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) to promote healthy tissue regrow → skin grafting / secondary reconstruction once infection clears.
