Leg Edema & Swelling

OPD

What Is Leg Edema?

Leg edema is fluid accumulation in the tissues of the lower legs, ankles, and feet. Caused by venous insufficiency, heart or kidney conditions, lymphatic blockages, or prolonged standing, chronic leg swelling stretches the skin, reduces local tissue oxygenation, and creates prime conditions for leg ulcers and bacterial infections.

Common Symptoms

Swollen, puffy legs and ankles that feel heavy or tight · Skin that retains a dimple/dent after being pressed for a few seconds (pitting edema) · Stretched or shiny skin appearance over lower calves · Shoes or socks feeling uncomfortably tight by end of day

Our Treatment Approach

Diagnostic cause identification (Vascular Doppler & systemic screening) → elevation protocols & custom compression therapy → pneumatic compression pump sessions → skincare regimens to protect stretched skin from breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why shouldn't leg swelling be ignored in diabetic patients?
Fluid buildup reduces oxygen supply to skin tissues. Strained skin easily cracks or blisters, leading to severe cellulitis or slow-healing venous ulcers.
How do compression stockings reduce leg edema?
Graduated compression stockings apply controlled pressure from the ankle upward, pushing pooled fluid back into lymph channels and blood vessels.
